How Often Should You Have Your Carpets Cleaned?

I am often asked how often you should have your carpets cleaned. The Institute for Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification recommends that you have your carpets regularly cleaned for several reasons.

First, the longer a stain or spot remains in the carpet, the less likely it will be able to be removed. Stains and spots that have had a long to set, are much more difficult to remove.

Second, cleaning your carpets will extend their life. Many soils are extremely abrasive. When we think about dirt, we normally think of something round and unobtrusive. If we were to look at dirt under a microscope, however, we would see that it is frequently jagged. Instead of thinking about dirt as a round ball, think of it as a clumsy saw. How well will your carpet hold up if you scatter miniature saws throughout it and then walk over it every day?

Finally, cleaning your carpets improves the indoor air quality of your home. Your carpets regularly filter contaminants out of the air. Cleaning your carpets will remove these contaminants from your home entirely.

How often you clean your carpets will depend on the population and activity in your home. A family with two children, a cat and two dogs will need to have the carpets cleaned more frequently (perhaps every six months.) A woman living alone may need to have her carpets cleaned less often (approximately every 18 months.) Most people should have their carpets cleaned every year.
